"A parish containing nearly 300 acres, of which 2000 are arable. The soil is various, one part being clay and wet, the other sandy, and both tolerably fertile. The crops are oats, barley, potatoes, flax, turnips and sown grasses. There are several tumuli; and tradition points out the field of a battle fought between the rival clans of Lindsay and Ogilvie in 1443. The churhc is distant about 6 miles from Aberbrothock, the nearest town." (The Gazetteer of Scotland, W Chalmers, Dundee 1803)
