We are aware that a silver trowel exists bearing the inscription "Presented to Hugh Dobie Esq on the occasion of his laying the Foundation Stone of a new Church for the North United Presbyterian Congregation Langholm 1st May 1866." Hugh Dobbie was the informant's maternal great grandfather, son of the Rev John Dobie. The wording suggests the congregation pre-existed this date.
