BALQUHIDDER, Perthshire - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"BALQUHIDDER, a parish in the county of Perth, Scotland, 3 miles to the S.W. of Lochearn Head. It is situated among the Grampians and consists wholly of mountain and glen. Within the parish, which is 16 miles in length and 7 miles in breadth, are the lofty mountains Benmore and Ben Voirlich, the former rising to the height of 3,819 feet, the latter 3,180 feet. There are several fine lakes, the principal of which are Loch Doine and Loch Voir. Loch Earn and Loch Lublaig also lie partly in this parish. The river Balvag runs through it. Both lakes and river are rich in trout and salmon. The village is seated on the shores of Loch Voil, and has in its churchyard the grave of Rob Roy, who at the time of his death in 1735, was residing at a farmhouse here. The living, of the value of £276, is in the presbytery of Dumblane, and in the gift of Sir J. Macgregor, Bart. The Duke of Atholl takes from Balquhidder the title of Viscount."

"LOCHEARN-HEAD, a village in the parish of Balquhidder, county Perth, Scotland, 29 miles W. of Perth. It is situated at the head of Loch Earn, surrounded by mountains and glens."

"LUBNAIG LOCH, a lake, situated partly in the parish of Balquhidder, and partly in the parish of Callander, county Perth, Scotland. It measures about 5½ miles in length, and half a mile at its broadest point. In its immediate vicinity is the Benledi mountain, a portion of which overhangs the waters of the lake. On the E. side of the lake stands Ardwhillary House, which was at one period the residence of Bruce, the Abyssinian traveller."

"STRATHYRE, a village in the parish of Balquhidder, county Perth, Scotland, 5 miles S. of Lochearnhead, and the same distance N.W. of Callander, betwixt Loch Voil and Lubnaig."
