Church History

It was founded in 1872.

The Wesleyan Methodists sent a mission to Shetland in 1822, encouraged by Rev Adam Clarke. He was instrumental in collecting the money which paid for the first chapel in Lerwick, so when the chapel was rebuilt in the 1860s, with a manse, it was as a memorial to Dr Clarke. It was opened to mark the Jubilee of Shetland Methodism in 1872.

The buildings were designed by William Parslow, who took into account "the necessities of the stormy winter seasons". The chapel was heated by means of a hot air apparatus.
