Ships built at Aberaeron

Mainly based on Shipping Registers, 1824-1900 at H M Customs and Excise Office, Aberystwyth, and also on Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping, 1882.

Definitions of types of ships/boats from the Concise Oxford Dictionary;

  • Sloop = A small one-masted fore-and-aft rigged vessel with mainsail and jib.
  • Smack = A single-masted sailing boat for coasting or fishing.
  • Schooner = A fore-and-aft rigged ship with two or more masts, the foremost being smaller than the other masts.
  • Brigantine = A two-masted sailing ship with a square-rigged foremast and a fore-and-aft rigged mainmast.
  • Brig = A two-masted square-rigged ship, with an additional lower fore-and-aft sail on the gaff and a boom to the mainmast.
  • Barquentine = A sailing ship with the foremast square-rigged and the remaining [usually two] masts fore-and-aft rigged.
  • Ketch = A two-masted fore-and-aft rigged sailing boat with with a mizzen-mast stepped forward of the rudder and smaller than its foremast.

The author describes the list that this index is based on as a preliminary one; saying "a great deal of patient research is necessary before we can obtain a definitive list of Aberaeron-built ships". Indexed in alphabetical order of ship's name.
