The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Merthyr contained the following places:

"MERTHYR, a parish in the hundred of Elvet, county Carmarthen, 4 miles W. of Carmarthen, its post town. The village, which is small, is situated on the river Cowin. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of St. David's, value £158, in the patronage of the Prince of Wales. The church is dedicated to St. Martin."
