day schools which existed in 1847 included here within an alphabetical list of parishes
It contains the names and types of day schools listed in the
Reports of the Commissioners of Inquiry into the State of Education in Wales published in 1847, the infamous Blue Books.
These complete Reports can be viewed in detail on the National Library of Wales site where, in the Appendices, extensive data on individual schools is shown in the Parochial Table of Day Schools, separated by county and hundred; there is a separate table for Sunday Schools - and also separate reports which are well worth investigating
The Carmarthenshire section of the Parochial Tables for Day Schools starts on page 2 and ends on page 32 (entries take up 4 pages).
The abbreviations for type of school adopted here are those used in the Reports themselves

The complete series of eight articles have been extracted Introduction; "William Roberts, a Baptist Minister at Blaina, Monmouthshire, and author of Crefydd yr Oesoedd Tywyll... 1852, a study of Mari Lwyd and Welsh folk customs, was in 1853 appointed agent in South Wales for the British and Foreign School Society. He was a native of Lannefydd, Denbighshire, hence his penname 'Nefydd'. The draft of the journal of his activities, written for the information of the Society's Committee, from 1853 to 1862 is preserved as N.L.W. MS. 7106. It is a valuable document for the history of the development of elementary education in South Wales. "
