The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of St Ishmael contained the following places:

"ST. ISHMAEL, a parish in the hundred of Kidwelly, county Carmarthen, 7 miles S.W. of Carmarthen. This parish, which is of considerable extent, lies on the coast of Carmarthen Bay, near the river Towey's mouth. It contains the townships of Broadlacy, Hull, Ishcoed, Llansaint, Treforis, and Ystrad, with the little watering-place of Ferryside. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in fishing, catching cockles, and in agriculture. The living is a vicarage' in the diocese of St. David's, value £187. The church is an ancient structure situated close to the sea-shore.

"BROADLACY, a hamlet in the parish of St. Ishmael, hundred of Kidwelly, in the county of Carmarthen, South Wales, 3 miles to the N.W. of Kidwelly. It is situated on the coast of Carmarthen Bay, at the mouth of the river Towey, and contains the village and watering-place of Ferryside."

"FERRYSIDE, a village in the parish of St. Ishmael, county Carmarthen, 3 miles N.W. of Kidwelly, its post town, and 7 S. of Carmarthen. The South Wales line of railway has a station here. It is situated on the E. side of the estuary of the river Towy, at its confluence with Carmarthen Bay, and is much frequented for the purpose of sea-bathing. Shrimp and cockle fishing affords employment to many of the inhabitants. There is a church, the living of which is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of St. David's, value £23, in the gift of the vicar of the parish. The ruins of Llanstephan Castle are within a short distance of the village."

"HALL, a hamlet in the parish of St. Ishmael, county Carmarthen, 3 miles N.W. of Kidwelty. There is also another hamlet of this name near Llangadock."

"ISHCOED, a hamlet in the parish of St. Ishmael, hundred of Kidwelly, county Carmarthen, 8 miles S.W. of Carmarthen. It is situated near the mouth of the river Towey."

"LLANSAINT, a township in the parish of St. Ishmael, county Carmarthen, 1 mile N.W. of Kidwelly. The river Gwendraeth-fawr flows through the township"

"TREFORIS, a hamlet in the parish of St. Ishmael, county Carmarthen, 3 miles N.W. of Kidwelly, on the river Towy."

"YSTRAD, a hamlet in the parish of St. Ishmael, county Carmarthen, 3 miles W. of Kidwelly."
