"SKEWEN, 1½ miles east, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844 from the parish of Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, and includes Coed franc, Dyffryn-Clydach and Neath Abbey; it is lighted with gas from works at Neath. There are four stations on the Great Western railway in the parish, viz.:-Neath Abbey, Skewen, Briton Ferry Road and Jersey Marine. The church of St. John, locally in Neath Abbey, was consecrated in 185I; it is an edifice of Welsh sandstone, with Bath stone dressings, in the Early English style, ... the stained east window was presented by Mrs. Jones, of Rockfield, in memory of her husband, who also gave a massive polished marble pulpit: in the chancel are two memorial windows to Edward Ackland Moore and his wife: the church affords 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1851. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £212, in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff and the Board of Patronage, ... The new Vicarage at Neath Abbey, built in 1905, is pleasantly situated 200 feet above sea level, and affords good views of the surrounding country. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, a mission church in connection with the parish church, erected in 1904 at a cost of upwards of £2,000, is a building in the Gothic style, and affords 375 sittings. At Mooretown is a mission church, also in connection with the parish church, erected at the expense of the late John Newall Moore esq., J.P. (d. 1905), and consisting of chancel and nave, with sittings for 400 persons. There are Baptist, United Methodist, Congregational and Wesleyan chapels. In the parish e chemical and tinplate and copper smelting works and two collieries, and a large oil refinery. The Coedfranc public library, in Evelyn road, was erected in 1905 at, a cost of £2000.
