- Soar Welsh CM Erected in 1832 David Arthur, Deacon, Corntown 1851 (6)
- Edward MATTHEWS (1813-1892), leading Calvinistic Methodist minister and author, born in St Athans. Often quoted as having a very pronounced Glamorganshire dialect that entranced his congregations. .......... ordained 1841, minister of Penuel chapel, Pontypridd 1849; returned to Ewenni Isaf, near Bridgend 1852; moved to Cardiff 1864; lived at Bonvilston 1876 to 1883; and finally came to rest at Bridgend where he died in 1892, buried in Nolton churchyard (C 5)
