Abstract of Population 1821 - Census Statistical Returns 1822.

A compilation of the significant increases, or decreases in population since 1811,
transcribed by Alan Longbottom. © 2000
Note: Most Census returns between 1801 and 1831 amounted to little more than
'head counts'. This account (compiled in 1822) simply suggests reasons for local population
changes, based on a comparison of those counts. Names of individuals were not recorded.
Abergavenny Hundred (Upper Division) - various Parishes
The increase of Population in the Parish of Llanfoist, and in
the Higher Division of Llanover Parish and in the Parish of
Trevethan is ascribed to the extension of iron-works.
Abergavenny Hundred (Upper Division) - Lanhileth Parish
A colliery has been opened at Lanhileth.
Abergavenny Hundred (Upper Division) - Lanwenarth Parish
Lanwenarth Ultra, and Lanwenarth Cilra, (which is in the Lower
Division of the Hundred) form the Entire Parish which contains
2,001 inhabitants. The increase in the Population in the Upper
Division of the Parish particularly among the males, is
attributed to the recent establishment of collieries and forges
ar Carn-y-Derris in the Parish.
Caldicott Hundred Upper Division - Newchurch Parish E Division
In this division of the Parish 60 families of the 85 employed in
Agriculture, are occasionally occupied in the Woods, cutting and
converting wood into charcoal.
Usk Hundred Lower Division - Panteague Parish
The increase of the Population in the Parish is ascribed to the
establishing of iron and tin works since 1811, but which are
not, at this time, in full operation.
Wentlloog Hundred Upper Division - St Woollos Parish with Newport
The increase of Population in the Parish is attributed to the
erection of cottages and other buildings at Pillgwenlly, and other
place near the Town of Newport, where the inhabitants are chiefly
employed in shipping coal, iron etc, and bringing the same from
coal and iron works on the hills as - Halliers.
Wentlloog Hundred Lower Division - Bedwelty Parish
The Entire Parish of Bedwelty contains 6,382 inhabitants.
The increase of Population in the Hamlets of Ishlawreod, Mamhole
and Ushlawreod, is attributed to the extension of coal and iron
works in the neighbourhood.
