Projects - Wales and Welsh counties

This page is a summary of the various projects undertaken on the county pages within Wales Genuki that are/were maintained by Gareth Hicks.
The idea is to centrally record what has been done and in some cases how it was done, how long it took and how much support it had from other people.
Unless other people are specifically named a project was actioned  by Gareth Hicks .

The end product is akin to a history of these particular county pages - I hope this will be of some interest to whoever follows me in years to come in maintaining them.

Anglesey

• Pages originally created by Brian Pears
• The National Gazetteer, 1868 extracts on each parish  page -  Colin Hinson's database introduced by Brian Pears at the initial pages creation stage
• County taken over from Brian Pears (March 2004)

• Bibliography - the entries are listed on each parish page under a Bibliography subject - the data gathered  by searching  the parish name on the NLW's online book catalogue. Some parishes with hardly any entries.
• Links to other sites - When pages first taken over I did a google run, searched on the parish name plus significant towns within the parish. Some parishes with hardly any entries
• Allocation of places to parishes in existing Gazetteer file and working out exact grid references; then Map links put on each parish page. This was done using the Kain/Oliver electronic map CD for parish allocation together with the online Get-a-map site with its easily visible OS grid references.
• Lewis Topographical Dictionary of Wales, 1833 extracts on each parish page - copied from the Cd published by Archive Cd Books using the excellent Omnipage Pro OCR software straight from the pdf images. The data was added to the separate National Gaz pages where they existed. This was done over the period May/Oct 2005 - the 5 counties of AGY, CAE, MER, MGY & RAD in the same alphabetical run through the CD. A major, single handed, undertaking
• Census transcriptions, various by Joyce and Douglas Hinde
• Major parish page upgrade using google, mostly material from People's Collection Wales , Church plans online and Archives Network Wales - the latter being most productive   (April 2006)
• Add entries from parish Gazetteer to 'Where is it in Anglesey' page  (May 2006)
• A contents listing for; -  Rees, Thomas & John Thomas. Hanes Eglwysi Annibynnol Cymru (History of the Welsh Independent Churches), 4 volumes (published 1871+). Plus extraction of all AGY entries in Welsh -translations still in progress (Feb/May 2008-2016)
• Day Schools in AGY in 1847. This database consists of day schools which existed in 1847 included here within an alphabetical list of parishes 
  It contains the names and types of day schools listed in the Reports of the Commissioners of Inquiry into the State of Education in Wales published in 1847 (Feb 08)
• Links to other sites review + data from National Archives site referencing holdings at Anglesey Record Office (Mainly)  (July 2008)
• Book details removed from county index page onto new Biblio page (May 2009)
• Nearby Places coding added to each parish page (Aug 2009)

• Cardiganshire Place Names listing - a gazetteer with links to the relevant parish page. (1999?)
• Church records for each parish taken from Cofrestri Plwyf Cymru: Parish Registers of Wales (National Index of Parish Registers, Vol. 13). National Library of Wales, 2nd edition, 2000 [originally from the 1994 edition] (sometime in 1999)
• Nonconformist records for each parish taken from The Parish Churches and Nonconformist Chapels of Wales: Their Records and where to Find them, Vol. One, Cardigan - Carmarthen - Pembroke. Rawlins, B.J., 1987. Supplemented by reference to the NLW book Cofrestri Anghydffurfiol Cymru : Nonconformist Registers of Wales, 1994. (sometime in 1999)
• Book Indexing project  - details on Wales - Genealogy Help Pages where it originated before completed indexes switched into Genuki. The names of the indexers are shown on each completed index page as well as the project page  The indexes are usually offered for lookups on the relevant Lookup Exchange pages. (Jan 1999 and running).
• Samuel Lewis's Topographical Dictionary 1833, extracts for each parish - these were done the hard way in the initial page creation phases, a combination of typing and using a poor OCR programme    (sometime in 1999)
• Extracts from The History of Cardiganshire" by S R Meyrick, 1810, specifically the reprint of the 1907 imprint published by Stephen Collard in July 2000            (March 2001)
• Pigot's South Wales Directory 1830 & 1844 -  entries copied from the Cd published by Archive Cd Books using the excellent Omnipage Pro OCR software straight from the pdf images. Not all parishes had entries. (around Dec 2001)
• Reports of the Commissioners appointed to enquire into the state of Education in Wales. 1847 - parish extractions by Aidan Jones. Separate pages used, not all parishes have extracts.   (early 2003)
• Hanes Darluniadol o Geredigion (An illustrated history of Cardiganshire)  Vol 1. Lewis, W.J. Cardiganshire. Aberystwyth, 1970. A partial extract      (2000/2003)
• Kelly's Directory South Wales 1895 or 1910 - entries copied from the Cds published by Archive Cd Books using the excellent Omnipage Pro OCR software straight from the pdf images. Parishes have one or other of these dates, not both - I think I started with 1910 but switched to 1895 as easier to OCR the pdf files -  (Oct 2003/Feb 2004)
• Parish entries from The Welsh Church Year Book, 1929 from the Cd by Archive Cd Books. (sometime in 2004)
• Cardiganshire Families Project - see the project page for details. Not as well supported as I had hoped, perhaps the rigid format I laid out for the data put people off, a few certainly had problems following it.  (Oct 2004 on)

• Parish based sketch maps of hundreds - these show where parishes fit into their hundred, and also how the hundreds are place within the county. Drawn freehand from sketches in the Rawlins book   The Parish Churches and Nonconformist Chapels of Wales mentioned above
• Allocation of places to parishes in existing Gazetteer file  -  as Anglesey
• The extraction of all places, villages, farms etc within each parish as shown on the parish map on the CD of  Historic Parishes of England and Wales: an Electronic Map of Boundaries before 1850 with a Gazetteer and Metadata [computer file]. (Kain, R.J.P., Oliver, R.R.).   The names of the volunteers are shown on the project page       (Aug 2004-Jan 2005)
• Church and chapel data from The Religious census of 1851 : A Calendar of the returns relating to Wales, Vol 1, South Wales. Ed. by   I.G   Jones, & D. Williams. UWP,   Cardiff, 1976      (Jan 2006)
• Data noted against existing chapel entries on parish pages from The Presbyterian Church of Wales site  which has a pdf file showing lists of CM chapels still open in each county (March 2006)
• Add entries from parish Gazetteer to 'Where is it in Cardiganshire' page  (Jun 2006)
• Major parish page upgrade using google, mostly People's Collection Wales , Church plans online and Archives Network Wales    (July 2006)
• Families Project - single database compiled in table format. Project temporarily suspended to new entries (Sept 2006). Re-opened Oct 2006 with new semi direct input option using google's online spreadsheet facility allowing multiple pre-authorised collaborators.
• Data noted against existing chapel entries on parish pages from the Union of Welsh Independents site which has a database of Independent chapels still open in each county (Dec 2006)
• Place names in county that have alternative spellings or have changed completely -  a list compiled from various sources  [Jan 2007]
• Add note to chapel entries which have entries as 'under threat' on the Capeli site (Feb 2007)
• Cardiganshire Chapels Database project  - collected all the chapel data that was already on the Genuki pages into one place, an entry for each chapel - and added in additional data from sources such as Coflein, Rawlins etc.  (Feb/March/April 2007)
• Cardiganshire Chapels Database project - Single county index created from the parish entries (Nov 2007)

Originally most Welsh counties only contained a basic list of the Church in Wales parish churches with little information such as grid references, etc.  Most other church denominations were missing completely.
Initially downloaded all religious sites from the RCAHMW Coflein Site and converted them into churches.csv files county by county.  This resulted in over 8000 records, whereas previously there were less than 1000 across Wales
Converted the 8000+ records into Drupal format using Phil Stringer's and my conversion routines
Assigned all 8000+ records  an "exact" location where possible
