Help with Family History problems

So you are having problems researching your family history. This is something that we all suffer from - good ways of getting help are to join the Devon Family History Society, and to use the Devon-related mailing lists.

Please DO NOT ask me for personal advice - though I am the maintainer of the GENUKI/Devon pages, in all probability I do not have the local knowledge that you require, leave alone the time to provide such a service, or at times even to reply to such queries. Instead, try sending a query to one of the Devon-related mailing lists.

However, I have provided a set of ready-made answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Devon, and GENUKI as a whole also has a Frequently Asked Questions file. Indeed, one of the things you should ask yourself when you have a problem is whether it is related just to Devon, or whether you should in fact be exploring the other levels of GENUKI (i.e the England level, or the UK & Ireland level), in order to find an answer.

Help with surnames

A useful way of contacting others researching your surnames is to search the Roots Surname List, which has international coverage, or Graham Jaunay's On-line English Names Directory. You can, of course, submit your own surname interests to these lists, or to any of the other UK & Ireland-related surname lists.

You should also check to see if anyone is conducting a "One-Name" study on your surname(s) of interest. The Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) web-site provides a Register of One-Name Studies.

Contributing information

You may wish to contribute some information about Drewsteignton. If you want to supply information about your own family, or a link to your family web page, then I'm sorry but you're out of luck. We are trying to provide information that will interest most users, and that would tend to be swamped by personal information. Links to personal pages are also a maintenance nightmare, as experience has shown that they change URL's or disappear quite frequently.

Now if that hasn't put you off, it is quite likely that you may know some basic facts or have some specialist knowledge that will be of use to other people. For example, look at a town/parish page with plenty of information, such as Clovelly. That's bound to give you some ideas of what can be provided at a local level.

Similarly, there are many topics that could be expanded on considerably, especially for the Devon county page, rather than just giving bibliographic citations.

So if you can provide any suitable information not currently on or linked to from the Drewsteignton page, or whichever would be the appropriate page for it in GENUKI/Devon, then do let me know using the form at the bottom of the page.

In addition, if you possess or have easy access to any books or other information resources, such as microfilmed original records, relating to Drewsteignton, and are willing to provide a lookup service, please let me know, and I will arrange to indicate this on the Drewsteignton page. And unless an index is already provided to such items, please consider contributing one - see the Devon Book Indexing Project.

Reporting problems

If you have found a problem on the Drewsteignton page, or elsewhere in the GENUKI/Devon pages, then please report it on the following form. I will then do my best to fix it.

But let me repeat - please DO NOT use this form to ask for my personal assistance or advice with your genealogical problems. Instead, try sending a query to one of the Devon-related mailing lists.
