Help and advice for Parish Index, Suffolk

Help with Family History problems

So you are having problems researching your family history. This is something that we all suffer from, and one of the best ways of getting help is to join a Family History Society. Suffolk is served by a number of Societies.

If you want an answer quickly, then join one of the genealogy Mailing Lists such as SFKGEN, a set of mailing lists for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the county of Suffolk.

Please DO NOT send your problems to, or ask research advice from, the Suffolk page maintainer, as he has neither the detailed local knowledge that you require, nor the time to provide such a service.

Help with surnames

A useful way of contacting others researching your surname(s) of interest is to search the Roots Surnames List, which has international coverage, or one of the many web-based Surname Lists.

The other source or place to look is the surname lists that individuals maintain for particular locations. Have a look at the Suffolk Surname Lists.

You can of course also submit your own surname interests to these lists. You should also check to see if anyone is conducting a "One-Name" study on your surname(s) of interest. The Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) provides a Register of One-Name Studies.

Contributing information

If you want to supply information about your own family, or a link to your family web page, then I'm sorry but you're out of luck. We are trying to provide information that will interest most users, and that would tend to be swamped by personal information. Links to personal pages are also a maintenance nightmare, as experience has shown that they change URLs or disappear quite frequently. I suggest you use the surname lists for this purpose.

Now if that hasn't put you off, it is quite likely that you may have some information or know some basic facts that will be of use to other people. If you have anything relating to Suffolk and would like to make it available to others, then please get in touch using the form below. It may be something you have written, or some out-of-copyright material that you have transcribed that you think may be of interest - or just some little piece of information such as the name of a book about Suffolk, the name of a local hitory society or similar society web page that we should link to. But please do remember, we are not looking for family-specific material, just material of general interest.

For example look at pages such as Freston or Beccles and Bungay. That's bound to give you some ideas of what can be provided. In particular I need to know the basic items, which frequently need a bit of local knowledge, for example:

So if you have any of this information, and it's not currently on one of the Suffolk pages, then do let us know on the form at the bottom of the page. If the appropriate town/parish page hasn't appeared yet, then please be patient and wait till it is.

Reporting problems
