Google maps can be panned to view an area off the map, by clicking and dragging the map. If this county section of the gazetteer is being actively developed you can also drag and drop a place marker if it is in the wrong place, and then enter a dialogue to report it to us. When dragging/dropping the position being marked is the black cross beneath the marker.

Select the markers on the map to show the individual gazetteer entry which contains links to other on-line maps.

Zooming

As you zoom out the number of icons that appear is reduced to avoid clutter. All places are shown at the larger scales, but as you zoom out only towns/parishes appear regardless of what you have specified in the search bar.

Start point in search bar

If you pan the map so that it is centred on a different point the starting location used by the search bar changes to this point. So you can pan the map, and just click 'New search' to show places around that location. This will also remember the current zoom level.

Key to map icons

Colour

A different colour is used for each county, with a darker shade used for those places which have their own unique web page e.g. parishes and townships. A paler shade is used for smaller places which don't have a unique web page. Information about these smaller places is held in the page for the parish or township to which they belong. As you zoom out the lighter icons will disappear to reduce overcrowding, and then the darker ones just leaving the place you selected as a starting point.

Shape

The icons used for places for which we have an exact location have a teardrop icon shape. If we only have an approximate location (within 1 kilometre), a square icon icon is used. The marker for places with an approximate location is placed at a random location within a 1 Km square on the map.

If we have not yet decided in which township or parish a place was located a square icon with nibbled edges icon is used. This shape is used for both exact and approximate locations.

Numbers

The number in the icon is provided to make it easier to find individual places using the list of place names under the map. Each county has its own range of numbers. Some icons may not have numbers yet, as they have only been created for the lower numbers so far. You can also see the name of the place by holding the mouse over the relevant icon.

Further information about a place

Click the icon for an individual place and an information box will appear. This contains links to further information about the place (unless we have not yet associated it with a parish or township), and links for further searches centred on that place.
