GENUKI Maintainers' Pages
All GENUKI web pages, as with the websites of other public and private bodies across the UK, are subject to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) and the extension to education in September 2002 by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001 (SENDA).
We have not yet developed a set of standards for GENUKI web pages specific to accessibility law. To do so would be a massive undertaking and, given the guidance available elsewhere, largely redundant. However, the GENUKI standards have been formulated with accessibility in mind.
We have decided that, in addition to the GENUKI standards, specific accessibility guidance is best obtained from others.
The BBC website has an excellent section on Accessibility and the web standards they have adopted. We haven't yet adopted the BBC's standards in full but maintainers should become familiar with how to provide improved accessibility. A useful start can be made by consulting the BBC's standards in their Accessibility section as something to which to aspire.
Another excellent source of advice on how to improve accessibility of web pages is W3C. See their Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI).
