Welcome to Genuki, ENG, Derbyshire Data compliments of Mike Spencer ----------------------------- 6th Jan 1860 a Meeting was held in the evening at the Batemans Arms Inn for the purposes of enrolling Volunteers to join the Bakewell and High Peak Rifle Corps when the following persons gave in their names. Francis PARKER appointed Serjeant Providing his own outfit John ARCHER appointed Corporal Equipped by Midd. Sub; Anthony MARSDEN Equipped by Midd Sub; John KIRKHAM providing his own outfit James ROWLAND withdrawn immediately George PARKER Equipped by Subscription Wm Henry PARKER Equipped by Subscription Abraham HEYWOOD Equipped by Subscription and at a meeting held at the same place the next evening John SWINDELL appointed Armourer Equipped by Subscription George HOWE withdrawn immediately and at a subsequent period John PARKER Equipped by the Corps John SPENCER (of Youlgreave) Equipped by the Corps Edwin MARSDEN Equipped by the Corps John LUCAS having previously joined at Bakewell and providing his own outfit The first drill took place in the upper room of the Factory? near Middleton on Friday 23rd March when the Middleton company together with a few new volunteers from the neighourhood were instructed by Serjeant KELLY of the Chesterfield Militia and on the 28th April the whole Corps assembled at Middleton for company drill,going through their evolutions in Mr ARCHERS large field near the valley.
