Compliments of: Karen Atkin The JERIA, from the HULL TIMES, 26/01/1935 The caption is: 'NO DOUBT WILL SOON SINK.....OUR GREETINGS TO THOSE AT HOME' These men are ten of the fourteen who, it is feared, have perished in the loss of the Grimsby trawler JERIA, off the coast of Iceland. The story is one that will live for ever in the annals of the sea - for they faced death with a smile. Their last message crackled out by their radio was as stirring as a MASEFIELD poem... as gallant as RUPERT BROOKES' "If I should die...", as noble as NELSON'S "England expects...". It ran: "No doubt the ship will soon sink with the whole crew. Will everyone who picks up this, probably our last message, send our greetings to our families - and to old England." It is a message that has moved the world - and Hull, with the whole country that was their last thought, salutes the heroes of the Jeria. There is a selection of photographs of the crew.
