Aged 58 he had been bandmaster of the Skegness Excelsior Silver Prize Band since the retirement of Mr Petch which occurred some few months ago. A tall, impressive figure, Mr Howe was well-known as a member of Messrs Butlin’s commissionaire staff and collapsed while at work three weeks ago. His health seemed to recover afterwards, but he passed away in his sleep on Wednesday. A Londoner by birth, the deceased gentleman had served with the 8th Welsh Pioneers. During the latter part of the War, whilst convalescing in Poonah, India, he was bandmaster for Lord and Lady Willingdon. A musical director in the theatrical business he had also conducted many well-known colliery and other bands. He had been in Skegness some fifteen or sixteen months. A widow, four sons and two daughters are left to mourn their loss. The deceased was given a military funeral on Saturday. The Skegness Town Silver Prize Band and the Excelsior Silver Prize Band, united under the baton of Mr T Evans, led the cortege to St Clements Church, where the services and the committal were conducted by the Reverend S W Boldon. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack and bore his bandmaster’s cap and sash. ------------------------------------------------- *** Last revised: 17-February-2004 ***
