Case remitted to York. 6th A man of miserly habits, named THOMAS HILES, died suddenly at Tipthorpe, near Driffield, of serious apoplexy, induced, the doctor had no doubt, by want of proper nourishment. - JOHN WOODWARD, a servant with the railway company at Grimsby, seriously injured by a train running over him at that place. He died on the following day. 11th Three men charged at the Hull Police Court with an extensive robbery of tobacco from Mr WILSON, Blackfriargate. One of the prisoners attempted to commit suicide. 12th Mrs BELL, Louth, died at the age of 100 years. 15th Death of Mr R. R. MELBOURNE, late lessee of the Queens Theatre. &c. 18th Distribution of prizes to the Hull Volunteer Artillery. 19th The East Riding magistrates sat in petty sessions at the Town Hall, Hull for the first time. 21st Serious fire in Hull; Messrs S HODGE & Co's oil mill in Hodge Street; damages about £25,000 25th Annual meeting of the Young Peoples Christian and Literary Institute. 27th The White Swallow, given by Major STAPYLTON as a tender to the training ship Southampton, arrived in the Humber. -- Captain SMITH, of the Hull Steamer Forest Queen, died suddenly at sea from heart disease. 28th Grand conversa??? at the Royal Institution. -- Burglary at Mr FROST's, Bridge Street and the Co-operative store, Bridge Street. Several other similar offences reported about this time. The White Swallow sunk during a heavy gale. FEBRUARY 2nd Annual meeting of the Hull Dock Company. 3rd The Hull Convent case - SAURIN vs. STARR and KENNEDY - commenced in the Court of the Queens Bench. 4th Shocking accident with the York and Ainsty hounds. Sir CHARLES SLINGSBY and five others drowned in the River Ure. 6th Destruction of the Theatre Royal, Humber Street, by fire. A policeman - DICKINSON, 130 - seriously injured by falling from the portico. 10th BERNARD HOPKINSON, a prisoner in the Hull gaol, whipped for insub- ordination. 12th Wm PROCTOR, a shunter, in the service of the North Eastern Railway, run over near the Pilot Boy, Humber Bank, and seriously injured. - LOUISA KIRK, charged at Welton, with setting fire to stacks, the property of Mrs. WRAY, Willerby. 14th Terrific storm; much damage to Hull shipping. 18th A man named HENRY WALSH accidentally killed on board the steamer Hamburg, through the breaking of a rope. - Wm SHEPHERD, a Hull seaman, severely stabbed at Lowestoft. 22nd It was resolved by the Tories to abandon the Hull election petition. 24th SARAH MASON, an elderly woman, attempted to commit suicide by jumping from the New Holland steamer, midway in the Humber. - Collision between the steamer Zebra and the steamer Pearl, at sea. 25th Sir J. V. R. JOHNSTONE, Bart., M.P. for Scarborough, died. 26th High Tides; the water on the sill of the Humber Dock rose to a height of 29 feet. The Hull Convent case was brought to a close: verdict for the plaintiff: damages £500. He was discharged. 19 - Mrs SARAH RUDDOCK drowned on the Derwent, at Malton, by the upsetting of a boat. 21 - Humber Rowing Regatta at which the champion was defeated in a pair oared race by the CALDERHEADS, of Greenock. -- Encampment of Lincolnshire Volunteers at Thornton Abbey. -- The Council met to consider the proposed Royal visit to Hull. Wilson and Sons, and Co., Hull}, died at his residence, Cottingham. 23 - The brig Olans capsized in the Victoria Dock. 24 - The foundation stone of St Silas Church, Barmston - was laid by Mrs TUDOR. 28 - The new West Dock formally opened. 29 - Mr CHURCH, C.E., visited Springhead with a view to reporting on the means of obtaining an increased water supply. JULY 2 - TITUS SALT, Esq., presided at the inauguration of the new portion of the Orphan Home in Park Street. -- Sir HENRY BOYNTON Bart., was interred at Burton Agnes. -- A little girl named STYCHE accidentally shot at Skirlaugh by a playmate. 5 - All England Cricket match at Hull. -- Dead body of a child, supposed to have been murdered, found on the road near Driffield. 6 - Accident on board H.M.S. Dauntless in the Humber. Several naval reserve injured while engaged at target practice by the accidental discharge of a cannon. 7 - Death of C. SIMPSON, Esq., aged 75. 8 - The steamer Lady Flora successfully launched. 9 - Serious fire at Messrs GILBERT and COOPER's foundry, Neptune Street; damages about £1000. -- Mrs ELIZABETH BROWNE died at Bridlington, aged 100. 10 - A man named LAWTON seriously injured at Messrs. EARLES's shipbuilding works, by falling from a vessel on which he was at work. -- Mr TUNE, chemist, New George Street, committed suicide by cutting his throat. -- Mr SIMPSON, farmer, Hornsea, committed suicide by hanging himself in a barn at Atwick. -- The Essex launched from Messrs. HUMPHREY and PEARSON's yard. -- FRANCIS RUGG attempted to commit suicide as Driffield. -- The keel Jane sank by a collision with the screw steamer William Conlman, of Goole. The master of the keel JOHN CARMICHAEL, and his wife drowned. 13 - An aged pauper, named WILLIAM SISSONS, committed suicide in the Sculcoates Union. 14 - Excursion of the Hull Workhouse children to Bridlington. 15 - Hessle Flower show. 16 - Irish Church Bill demonstration in Hull. 19 - The steamer Resolute sunk by coming in collision with the screw steamer Hero off the West Dock. -- Goole regatta. 20 - The Wesleyan conference in Hull commenced. 21 - Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales arrived at Brantinghamthorpe and were most enthusiastically received. They were the guests of C. SYKES, Esq., M.P., Brantinghamthorpe Hall. 22 - The Prince and Princess of Wales left Brantinghamthorpe for Hull. They arrived at the Royal Station Hotel at one o'clock, and were presented with an address from the corporation. Their Royal Highnesses were then taken in triumphal procession through the principal streets of the town, which were densely crowded. At the West Dock more addresses were presented, and the ceremony of declaring the dock open and naming it was proceeded with. The Prince and Princess afterwards took luncheon with a large and distinguished company on the Dock Company's premises. 23 - Ocean yacht race from Lowestoft to Hull. -- Loss of the Clio s.s. of Hull, and 17 hands, by collision with the steamer Niobe, off Gothland. 26 - Two poachers named TRAVES charged with killing ENOCH GOLDY, at Grimsby, on the 18th May, were found guilty of manslaughter. Seven years transportation each. 27 - Loss of the Marsdin [s.s], of Hull, by fire, while on her passage from Cronstadt to Dunkirk. Crew and passengers saved. -- Grimsby yacht regatta. 28 - Humber yacht regatta. -- Dead body of a child found in a hedge bottom at Driffied. -- Great liberal demonstration at the Rifle Barracks. HENRY KAY, plumbers apprentice, fell from a ladder in Waterworks Street, and was killed. 10th; WILLIAM ELLENBOROUGH, eleven years old, was drowned in the Trent, at Gainsborough, whilst bathing. 11th; SARAH JANE ROE, wife of a gasfitter, at Beverley, died from the effects of taking sugar of lead. 13th; Incendiary fire at Mr JOHNSON's farm, Riplingham. - Termination of the strike of EARLE's joiners. - The United South of England Eleven played a match at cricket against 22 of Hornsea. 15th; WILLIAM HENRY ASHTON, a little boy, fell into the Humber Dock basin, and died shortly after being got out of the water. 16th; A young man, named PALMER, recently of Hull, drowned himself in a drain at Boston. 18th; Colonel PEASE was presented with his portrait, and Mrs PEASE with a diamond pendant. - RICHARD HARRISON, retired farmer died very suddenly after bathing in the sea at Scarboro'. - Sudden death of Mr KELSEY, station master at Hornsea. 19th; Stack fire on the premises of Mr J H PEART, Malton; considerable damage done. - ALVINIA CHAPMAN, wife of a fireman, found drowned in the dock at Grimsby. 20th; Trial trip of the North German Lloyds' steamer Hohenstaufen. 21st; Destructive fire on the premises of Mr JACOB COHEN, Waterhouse Lane. - The roof of a locomotive engine shed at Dairycoates fell in; no person injured. - Mr ROWNTREE, Pocklington, died from burns accidentally received on the previous Saturday. 22nd; Mr J L JACOBS, solicitor, Hull, was thrown from his horse at Springhead, and considerably injured. 24th; Fatal accident at Goole regatta, Mr THOS. CASS being drowned. 26th; Fire at Mr WHITE's flour mill, Dansom Lane; estimated damage £2500 27th; BETSY PARKER, dressmaker, Cleethorpes, found guilty of concealment of birth; six months imprisonment. - Inquest at Hull, on T E BLANCHARD, a youth who was found drowned in the Humber. 29th; Flower show at Hornsea and Agricultural Show at Bridlington. 31st; Driffield Agricultural Show. - WILLIAM LAKING, club steward, committed suicide at a lodging house in Station Terrace. - A shocking boiler explosion occurred at Messrs. JAMESON's mill in Canning Street. Mr R W JAMESON and a fireman named HENRY HEWSON were killed. SEPTEMBER 1st; The body of a female child was found floating in the Albert Dock. - EARLE'S Shipbuilding Company launched from their yard the steam yacht Czarevna for H.I.M. the Grand Duke of Russia. - Foundation stone of Primitive Methodist Chapel laid at Goole; a platform gave way, but no one was injured by the accident. 2nd; Mr JAMES WILKINSON, a retired cork cutter, was accidentally killed on the Beverley Road by coming in collision with a horse and cart. - Heavy thunderstorm at Beverley. A builder named EVERETT seriously injured by lightning. - At a public meeting it was resolved that a memorial statue of the late JAMES CLAY Esq., should be placed in the Hull Town Hall. - Second Exhibition of the Holderness Floral Society at Preston. 8th; Board of Trade inquiry as to the stranding of the s.s. Ella Constance begun at the Hull Police Court. 11th; The Princes Bank boulevard scheme first came before the Park Committee. 12th; ARTHUR FRANCIS, son of Mr SOLBY, of Patrington, was accidentally crushed by the wheels of a wagon in the harvest field and killed. - Launch of the s.s. Carpathian from HUMPHRYS and PEARSON's shipyard. 14th; EDWARD NORTHARD, Trinity House lad, gallantly rescued a boy from drowning in the Albert Dock. He subsequently received several public awards for his bravery. - CHARLES MYERS, 13, Driffield, killed at that place by a horse, of which he had charge, taking fright and dragging him at it's heels for half a mile. - M. DUROUF's balloon was brought to Hull by the smack Zedora. Several testimonials were given to the smack Grand Charge for gallantly rescuing M. and Madame DUROUF. 15th; A captain named Wm. MUDD committed suicide on the Beverley Road, being of unsound mind at the time. - Official trip of the Chilean ironclad Almirante Cochrane, built by the EARLE's company. - Inquest at Sutton as to the death of two illegitimate children. 16th; The Waterworks Inquiry Committee, after extending over several months, published their reports. - WATKIN ANDREW had a marvellous escape from death while working in Messrs. ENGLAND's steam corn mill. - Fire at Messrs. CRAVEN BROTHERS and WATSON's premises, Naylor's Row; estimated damage to stock £100. 17th; Man (unknown) found drowned in the River Hull. 18th; Fire at Mr. A PICKERING's laboratory in Lowgate. 21st; JOHN HORNER, saddler, Market Weighton, killed by accidentally (falling?) down a cellar staircase. - Opening of new Board Schools at Driffield. - Intelligence was this week received that three Grimsby fisherman had been drowned at sea. 24th; Town's meeting on the question of gas supply to the old town. - Mr GRAY, of the marine department of the Board of Trade, visited Hull, and had an interview with local ship owners. - Launch of the Bessemer saloon steamer from EARLE's shipbuilding yard. 25th; JOHN BINNINGTON, currier, Hull, committed suicide by hanging himself. He was of unsound mind. 26th; ARTHUR HEATON, seaman, fell into the hold of the s.s Essex, and broke his leg. He died at the Infirmary on the 28th. 27th; Boat accident on the Humber; narrow escape of 14 persons; CHARLES CLARK, labourer, East Street Drypool, drowned. 28th; Messrs. HUNTER and FOWLER, Hull, launched the steam smack Harmony. - At a special meeting of the Town Council it was resolved to dismiss the engineer. 29th; Messrs. HUMPHRYS and PEARSON launched a new steamer from their works for Messrs. PILE and Company, London. - Inquiry by Board of Trade as to the collision between the steamers Emily and Londos, of Goole, commenced at Hull. OCTOBER 1st; The Hull Town Council requested the Waterworks Committee to resign. The council also determined the engagement of Mr MANSFIELD HARRISON, water rate collector, and Mr W HARRISON, contractor. 2nd; Opening of a new Primitive Methodist Chapel at Driffield. - Fire at Messrs. HALCOMB's bag warehouse, Blackfriargate; damages about £300. - ROBERT POSTILL, Customs officer, injured by falling from a train, near Ferriby. He died at the Hull Infirmary on the 12th. 3rd; Foundation stone of the drainage works at Hornsea, laid by Mr J A WADE. - BENSON HARPER, cartman, Staniforth Place, committed suicide. Verdict: poisoned himself whilst insane. 5th; WILLIAM HANLEY, fisherman's apprentice, drowned at sea from on board the smack Two Sisters. 6th; Women's suffrage meeting held in Hull. 7th; Fire at Mr F HARRISON's oil refinery, Dansom Lane; one of the workmen was so severely injured that he died about a week afterwards. 8th; Election of the new Waterworks Committee by the Council. 11th; The roof of the railway engine house at Selby, partially destroyed by fire. Hull cattle and pleasure fair. 12th; GEORGE COLLINS, shepherd, Boltongate, Pocklington, died whilst taking a walk with two friends. - The Police Investigation Committee met, and recommended the dismissal of PC PENNOCK, (135). - THOMAS BRICKLEBANK, cabdriver, Hull, fell in the Station Yard and fractured seven ribs. He died three days afterwards. 13th; Dog show at the Artillery barracks. 14th; Stormy meeting of the Watch committee. PENNOCK (135) and KILVINGTON (74) were dismissed for excess of duty. 15th; The Hull smack Adventure in collision of Flamborough. 16th; A lioness in BOSTOCK's (WOMBWELL's) menagerie gave birth to five cubs at Hull. 17th; HENRY, son of WILLIAM BROWN, No 3 Jarvis Street, died from the effects of scalds received on the 25th Sept. 19th; WILLIAM WHITE, aged 10 years, fell from the keel HANNAH into the River Hull, and was drowned. - JOSEPH HENRY ROBBINS, 13, fell from his father's water boat into the Albert Dick and was drowned. - Foundation stone of School Board's school laid at Goole by Mr J A ROCKETT. 21st; Fearful storm in Hull. Much property was destroyed and Mrs ELLYARD, Kingston Terrace, Hessle Road, was killed by the chimney of an adjoining house falling upon her. - Subsequently reports were received of great damage having been done to Hull shipping; Five fishermen were drowned at sea. 23rd; RICHARD EMMERSON, seaman, 66 years of age, was run over and killed by a train on the Albert Dock side. 24th; The S.S. HUMPHRYS and PEARSON. NOVEMBER 2nd; Municipal elections. 3rd; Several persons were summoned before the Hull police magistrate and fined for neglecting to have their children vaccinated. - Opening of the Hull Literary and Philosophical Society's session. - CHARLES HARTLEY, apprentice, fell from the smack Jasper into the Humber and drowned. - On the same day WILLIAM JOHNSON, deck boy, was drowned from on board the smack Ben Bolt. 4th; The Mayor (Ald. SEATON) gave a grand luncheon at the Town Hall. 6th; Ald. JAMESON was presented with a memorial of the foundation of the Scholarship bearing his name. 9th; Mayor choosing day. Ald. WELLS was elected Mayor of Hull, and Mr F SUMMERS, solicitor, Sheriff. Eight aldermen were also chosen, one in place of Ald. LUMSDEN, who resigned. Mr CHAPMAN, late chairman of the Waterworks Committee, was not re-elected an alderman, Messrs. He died soon after reaching the Infirmary. 17th; Inquest at Grimsby on the body of JOHN BULMORE, contractor, who was knocked down by a train from Cleethorpes, and killed. The verdict was an open one. - Hull School of Art: Distribution of prizes. 18th; Inquest at Hull on an emigrant named ELBERT WALESKENSY. Verdict: Death from premature confinement at sea. - Extraordinary municipal elections in West Sculcoates and Holderness Wards. - The infant child of Wm DOBSON, Beverley, accidentally suffocated in bed. - JOHN WHITRICK, foreman labourer, accidentally shot at North Dalton; he was getting through a hedge when his gun went off. Death ensued very quickly. 20th; GEORGE BROWN, labourer, Selby, died from injuries received a few days previously; he had fallen from a hayrick onto a turnip cutter. 23rd; The s.s. Mabel, belonging to Messrs. R ASH and Co., Hull, was run into and sunk by a Swedish steamer off Revel. 24th; Fire in Bells Yard, Ousegate, Selby. - A woman named WALKER dangerously burnt. - Dense fog prevailed on the Humber from the preceding Friday. 25th; Annual dinner Hull Licensed Victuallers'' Association; Mr M A BASS, M.P. presided. 26th; Distribution of prizes to the Hull Rifle Volunteers. NORWOOD and WILSON. 3rd; An inquest was held at Hull police station as to the death of THOMAS BRADBURY, a labourer, who was killed by falling from a scaffolding; verdict "Accidental death". - JOHN MOORE, an Irish hawker, was frozen to death in a field near Bubwith. 4th; An inquest was held at Hessle on the body of Mrs JANE GARDNER, who it was found had died from severe burns. Shortly after the inquest her husband, Mr DAVID GARDNER, died somewhat suddenly. - ROBERT BROWN, street musician, committed suicide by drowning himself in the Princes dock. 5th; Mr ROBERT SCOTT, 79 years of age, residing in Dansom Lane, died from the effects of a fall on the 2nd inst. 6th; A stack fire occurred on the premises of Mr J FOSTER, The Holmes, Selby. 7th; Councillor SYMONS re-elected governor of Hull Workhouse. - Fatal boiler explosion at Moorends, Goole; JAMES FIRLEY, engineer, killed. - Wm T GROVE's apprentice fell from the smack, Confidence, off Spurn, and was drowned. 8th; The loss of the Viceroy of Hull. - Board of Trade inquiry commenced. - ROBERT STEPHENSON, poulterer, Prospect Street, died from injuries received from a fall on the 30th November. 9th; A terrific storm prevailed on the Humber. 10th; ELIZABETH MALTBY, Belton, was so severely burnt, by accident, that she died the next day. - Mr S WARREN, Q.C., D.C.L., resigned his appointment as recorder of Hull. - Mr DAVID MAXWELL was elected engineer to the Hull Waterworks. 11th; A fire broke out at the North Eastern Railway Company goods station at Sculcoates, and did considerable damage. - Mr RICHARD BUCKTON, watchmaker, died at the infirmary from injuries received from falling into the Humber Dock bridge lock pit on the 1st inst. 12th; Mr W TORR, of Aylesbury, died, aged 66. - The smack Beautiful Star, was run down in the Hull roads by a Goole vessel. 14th; At Beverley, on Monday, a coroners jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against Mr and Mrs TAWN with respect to the death of MARY JANE GOSPEL, aged 13. 15th; Annual meeting Ort(?) of Hull Society. - The premises occupied by Wm LAMB, 4 Princes Dock Street, were partially destroyed by fire. - Bazaar in aid of the Hull Christian and Literary Institute. 16th; At Wintringham a verdict of manslaughter was returned against PHILIP NELTHORPE, captain of a tug, in respect of the death of ANN, daughter of JOHN SWANWICK, of the ketch Ocean. 17th; Fire at Messrs. FOUNTAIN's office, Church Lane; damage inconsiderable. - JOHN BROWN, labourer fell into the whiting pits at Beverley, and was killed. 18th; THOMAS LEONARD, labourer, received injuries which resulted in death by some debris falling upon him from a house in Sykes Street. 21st; The Viceroy inquiry terminated, the owners being exonerated from blame. - The Bessemer saloon ship went on her trial trip. 22nd; The promoters of the tramways in Hull took luncheon with the Mayor, several members of the corporation, &c., at the Royal Station Hotel. 23rd; Sir GEO. CHOLMLEY died at this residence, Newton Hall, Boynton, aged 92 years. - JAMES SELBY, rullyman, died at the infirmary from the effects of a fall sustained on the previous Saturday. - Hull Artillery Volunteers: Distribution of prizes. - Inauguration of the South Myton Liberal Benefit Building Society. - Messrs. PAGE's, draper's shop, in Ocean Place, destroyed by fire. 25th; Disastrous fire at Messrs. HILLS' warehouse in High Street, damages estimated at considerably over £20,000. 28th; Mr HALL's, bootmaker, shop in Prospect Street, was found to be on fire; the damage done was not large. 29th; Lord HAMMOND was entertained at luncheon by the officials of the Hull Trinity House. At this gathering the ex-Mayor, Ald. SEATON, presented to E. NORTHARD, a Trinity House boy, the Royal Humane Societies medal. 30th; Anniversary of the Commercial Travellers Schools (Hull branch Committee) 31st; New peal of bells rung at St Stephens Church. - Impending strike of Hull boilermakers. - The port of Goole was closed by the ice, much ice floating about the Humber.
