Mottoes of some Devonshire families
Trans. Devon Assoc., vol. 29, (1897), pp. 286-290.
by
F.T. Colby
Prepared by Michael Steer
This brief paper was presented, perhaps as light entertainment at the Association's 1897 Kingsbridge meeting. In Heraldry, a family mottoe is "a short saying expressing the guiding maxim or ideal of a particular family, especially when used as part of a coat of arms". The author provides examples of variety of Devon family mottoes, with some illustrations of the mistakes made in interpreting them. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
