Norfolk: Church Administration Areas Directory

Introduction

The Church of England played an important role in the community over matters both ecclesiastical and secular from the 1300s until its power was diminished in the 1800s with the advent of the General Register Office, Poor Law Reform, Will probate changes etc.

The areas of land over which the church, its courts and officials presided over are known as ecclesiatical jurisdictions.

These areas were generally based on grouping Parishes together to form a Deanery which themselves are formed into Archdeaconries overseen by a court (see later).

The items covered included Parish Registers, Bishop's and Archdeacon's transcripts, church maintenance, poor relief etc. at a local level through to the issuing of Marriage licences and Will probate (before 1858).

This directory gives the church court for each parish in which records should be searched for in the first instance.

History

By the 1300s England had been split up for ecclesiastical matters into two areas (called Provinces) each of which was headed by an Archbishop. One was the Province of Canterbury and the other the Province of York. The Archdiocese of Canterbury (the senior of the two) covered most of southern England which included all of the county of Norfolk.

Each Archdiocese contains a number of dioceses (also known as sees) each of which was headed by a Bishop.

The diocese of Norwich covered the Counties of Norfolk and Suffolk and parts of Cambridgeshire until 1837 (under the Jurisdiction of the Bishop of Norwich).

At this point in time the Norwich diocese:-

  • Lost some parishes located in Cambridgeshire and Norfolk to the diocese of Ely.
  • Most of the Archdeaconry of Sudbury was also added to the diocese of Ely.

Each diocese was split further into Archdeaconries (overseen by an Archdeacon) and Peculiars (normally answerable directly to the Bishop or his representative) all of which held their own courts. Archdeaconries did not cover specific areas of the county, such as east and west, but rather a number of groups of parishes (as will be seen later). Similarly Peculiars covered a few parishes which were very often spread far and wide about the diocese.

Each Archdeaconry consisted of a number of Deaneries.

Each parish was in either a Deanery and therefore in the Archdeaconry of which the Deanery was a part, or less often in a Peculiar, for matters which required church administration.

This gives a tiered structure of the following form:-

Archdiocese
|

+-------+--------+

Diocese of Norwich

This consisted of the following Archdeaconries and Peculiars and reflects the situation up to 1857:-

Other Peculiars in Norfolk but NOT in the Diocese of Norwich.

Other Peculiars in Suffolk and Cambs surrounded by, but NOT in the Diocese of Norwich.

  • Peculiar of the Bishop of Rochester contains :-
    • 6 - Isleham (Cambs)
    • 7 - Freckenham (Suffolk)
  • Archbishop of Canterbury's Peculiar Deanery of Bocking contains :-
    • 8 - Hadleigh, Monks Eleigh, Moulton.

Notes on the Diocese of Norwich

  • Norfolk was covered by the Archdeaconries of Norwich, Norfolk and the Peculiars numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 [which contained Emneth - the only parish in Norfolk NOT in the diocese of the Bishop of Norwich].
  • The parishes numbered 6, 7 and 8 of the Other Peculiars section are surrounded by the parishes forming the Deanery of Fordham. Their locations are marked on the map following.
  • Sparham Deanery was moved from the Archdeaconry of Norfolk to that of Norwich in 1846.
  • Some of the Peculiars, which were abolished in 1857, contained more parishes before the Reformation (in the 1530s).
  • There have been other minor changes after 1847 which may affect where records have been deposited (see below and later sections).
  • In 1866 the Deanery of Lynn was split into the Deanery of Lynn Norfolk and the Deanery of Lynn Marshland.
  • In 1894 the Archdeaconry of Lynn was created and the Archdeaconries of Norwich and Norfolk both lost Deaneries.
  • The Archdeaconry of Suffolk was retained until about 1914 when all of it (except the Deanery of Lothingland) became part of the newly created diocese of St. Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
  • Further boundary changes occured in 1918, 1931 and 1970.
  • Norfolk Record Office (NRO) abbreviations are given in [] brackets following the headings eg. [ANW]
  • Wills can often be found proved in the wrong court.

From the following lists search for the parishes where the parties lived, owned land etc. as they have a direct bearing on which church courts records to search first.

  • The numbers 1, 2, ...8 on the map above indicate the location of the parishes in each of the Peculiars listed above. A plus (+) symbol following a number means that there is more than one parish (in that area), which forms part of the Peculiar (see later for full listing).
  • The Deaneries in Suffolk which adjoined the county boundary are shown.

Additional Notes

  1. Places marked as (ex. par.) are extra parochial and are normally under the control of the Bishop. In practice it is best to check under the appropriate Archdeanconry as well.
  2. Some Deaneries covered the same area as Hundreds.
  3. Repps is also sometimes called Southrepps Deanery.
  4. Heacham Deanery is also called Hitcham Deanery.
  5. Waxham Deanery is also called Waxton Deanery.
  6. Breccles Deanery is also called Breckles Deanery.
  7. Some areas of Norwich such as :-
    • "Town Close" eventually became part of the City and later part of Lakenham St Alban (created in 1949).
    • Others like Heigham were split up into new parishes called
Heigham Most Holy Trinity (1867), Heigham St Philip (1868), Heigham St Thomas (1889) and Heigham St Barnabas (1907), all in the Deanery of Humbleyard, as the city expanded.
    • Refer to the book by F. Youngs Jr. for more details.
  8. There are a few instances where a published directory has the wrong Deanery or Archdeaconry to which a parish belongs.
  9. The details of the change of Peculiar Administration can be read in the Norwich Record Office document PD228/72 (Thorpe Episcopi). This was duly published in the "London Gazette" of Friday 11th June 1847, Number 20743, Pages 2123/4/5
  10. The Parish of "Cockthorpe" appears under the both the Deaneries of Holt and Walsingham so it is advisible to check both for records.
