AIKTON, Cumberland - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868

"AIKTON, a parish in the ward of Cumberland, in the county of Cumberland, 3 miles to the N.E. of Wigton, and 9 W. by S. from Carlisle. It is situated near the river Wampool, and includes the several townships of Aikton, Biglands with Gamelsby, Wampool, and Wiggonby. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Carlisle, value £546, in the patronage of the Earl of Lonsdale. The church is dedicated to St. Andrew, and is a small ancient structure. The parochial charities amount to £179, the whole of which, with the exception of £3, the endowment of Watson's school, belongs to the grammar school of Wiggonby, which was founded in 1792 by Margaret Hodgson."

"BIGLANDS, a township united with Gamblesby, in the parish of Aikton, in the ward and county of Cumberland, 3 miles to the N. of Wigton. It is situated on the river Wampool, and contains a sulphureous spring."

"GAMBLESBY, a hamlet in the parish of Aikton, ward and county of Cumberland, 2 miles N. of Wigton. It forms a township with Biglands. The Independents and Wesleyans have chapels."

"WAMPOOL, a township in the parish of Aikton, ward and county of Cumberland, 6 miles N.W. of Wigton, and 1 mile from Aikton. It is situated on the river Wampool, which rises near Serbergham Castle, and flows about 20 miles to Morecambe Bay, at Anthom."

"WIGGONBY, a township in the parish of Aikton, ward and county of Cumberland, 4½ miles N.E. of Wigton, near Down Hall. Within the township is an ancient encampment, 180 feet square, now planted with fir and surrounded by a ditch."
