"BASSENTHWAITE, a parish and village in the ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, in the county of Cumberland, 4½ miles to the N.W. of Keswick. It is situated in a district abounding in fine scenery, mountains, wood and water, on the banks of the river Derwent and the beautiful lake of Bassenthwaite. The lake, which lies at an elevation of 200 feet above the level of the sea is above 4 miles in length, and 1½ in breadth. Its western bank is well wooded; the eastern is highly cultivated, and indented with several pleasant bays."
