Civil Registration Offices in Cumbria

Civil registration of births, deaths and marriages, regardless of religious affliiation was required in England begining July 1st, 1837. The system remains essentially unchanged today.

Records are maintained in London at what was known as the General Register Office, but which was, in 1970, renamed the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys. Copies of all birth, death and marriage certificates issued since 1837 can be found there, although there is no direct public access to the records, only to the indexes.

Although not presently available in Cumbria, microfilm copies of the indexes can be viewed at the Preston District Library, Market Square, Preston PR1 2PP. In most cases, microfilm copies of the indexes are also available from the Mormon Church Family History Centers.

The original registration records are maintained by the District Superintendent Registrar of each Registration District. These districts do not follow church parish boundries, but were based on those of the Poor Law Act of 1834.

As in London, there is no public access to the records themselves, but one may purchase certified copies of the certificates from the local Registrar Offices.

Details of the Registration Districts in Cumberland, are provided on a separate web page by Brett Langston.
