Lesnewth
The parish of Lesnewth, (Cornish: Lysnowydh), is situated in the Deanery of Trigg Minor, and in the
Hundred of Lesnewth. It is bounded on the north by St Juliot, on the east by St
Juliot and Davidstow, on the south by Davidstow, and on the west by Minster.
This small thinly populated parish is about six miles east of Tintagel Head.
The manor of Lesnewth is mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Lesnewth is
a small hamlet with few houses, farms and has a church. It is surrounded by
farmland and so very peaceful.
Besides the Churchtown, other places include
Penpol.

inscriptions from the Lesnewth cemeteries, and recorded by the CORNWALL
INSCRIPTIONS PROJECT, are available on-line. The survey by CIP was carried out in September 2004 when 88 memorials were recorded; in addition, Maclean recorded a headstone in 1873 which was not found during this CIP survey.

- Anglican. The parish church is located in OS Grid Square SX1390 and is now dedicated to St Michael and All
Angels. It has been previously dedicated to St Knet. Having become considerably
dilapidated, it was taken down and rebuilt in 1866; the characteristic features
of the old church - Norman, Early English, and Perpendicular, being carefully
preserved. The old church had consisted of a chancel, nave, and north and south
transepts. The new church has a chancel, nave, and vestry only. The vestry is
separated from the church by a Norman arcade supported on two massive circular
piers. The tower is of three stages, and is finished with battlements and
pinnacles. The belfry consists of five bells.
