"COMPTON, a parish in the hundred of Buddlesgate (lower half), in the Winchester division of the county of Hants, 2 miles S.W. of Winchester, its post town, and 10 N. of Southampton. It is situated on the river Itchen, and is intersected by the South-Western line. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Winchester, value £329, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is partly in the Norman style of architecture. There are National schools for both sexes. The charities amount to £9 per annum. On the Down are traces of the camp which Cromwell pitched previous to the siege of Winchester Castle, then defended by the royalists. The Dean and Chapter of Winchester are lords of the manor."
