Carlton Curlieu (Carlton Curliew)

Carlton Curlieu is a parish and a small village and the chapelry of Illston (Ilston) on the Hill. It is about 95 miles north of London, 9 miles southeast of Leicester city and 7.5 miles northwest of Market Harborough. Burton Overy parish lies to the west and Kibworth Harcourt parish to the south. The parish covers 1,406 acres.

- By automobile, it is probably easiest to take the A6 arterial road southeast out of Leicester city through Wigston. At Kibworth Harcourt, turn left (north) and follow the country road to Carlton Curlieu.
- The parish was largely pasture, with some 100 acres used for growing wheat, beans and oats.
- Carlton Curlieu Hall was the seat of the Lady HAZLERIGG in 1848.
- The national grid reference is SP 6997.
- You'll want an Ordnance Survey Explorer map, which has 2.5 inches to the mile scale.

- The place was an ancient parish of Leicester county as well as a Civil Parish when those were established.
- The parish is in the ancient Gartree Hundred in the southern division of the county.
