"BITTERLEY, a parish in the hundred of Overs, extending also into the hundred of Munslow, in the county of Salop, 4 miles to the N.E. of Ludlow, its post town. It comprises the townships of Bitterley, Cleeton, Henley, Hill-upon-Cot, Middleton, and Smitten. Coal and iron abound here, especially at Clee Hill, and many of the inhabitants are employed in working the collieries and mines."
