"ACTON, a parish in the hundred of Babergh, in the county of Suffolk, 3 miles N.E. of Sudbury station, 71 from London, and 1 E. from Long Melford, not far from the river Stour. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Ely, value £255, in the patronage of Earl Howe, who is also lord of the manor. The church is dedicated to All Saints, and contains five monumental brasses, the earliest dated 1302, of the families of the Bures, Brians, and Daniells of Acton Place, besides a beautiful marble monument of Robert Jennings, Esq., and his lady. There are some ancient paintings, and other curiosities, in the old mansion."
