The Ancient Parish of HELMSLEY

[Transcribed information from the early 1820s]

"HELMSLEY, (or HELMSLEY UPON THE BLACK MOOR), a parish in the wapentake of Rydale, 6 miles from Kirkbymoorside, 16 from Malton, and 23 from York; formerly a place noted for stately Elms, in the midst of which the Druids on the hill, still bearing their name, performed their mystic rites. Market, Saturday. Fairs, May 19, July 16, Oct. 1 and 2, Nov. 5 mid 6, for horned cattle, sheep, linen and woollen cloth, &c.; if the fairs for horned cattle fall on a Monday, the sheep fairs will he held on the Saturday preceding. • The following census material has been transcribed by Haydn Scott:
  • Helmsley in 1823, (in Acrobat format). The first record to list every man, woman and child living in the township of Helmsley was the Population Census of 1841, but 18 years earlier Tukes and Ayer surveyed the town and produced a numbered map showing every property. They also prepared a detailed list of 274 tenancies

• Between 1823 and 1890 (probably around 1851) the township of Bilsdale Midcable (in this parish) became a parish in its own right. See Bilsdale Midcable Parish.
