BEDFORDSHIRE:
Bedfordshire School Records

Various types of records are held for the schools within Bedfordshire by the Bedfordshire Archives & Records Service these are grouped below under the three headings.

Records Kept by Schools

The Archives Service holds a large quantity of school records including those deposited by schools themselves. The following list concentrates on the two most used types of record - log books and admission registers, though other records are noted.

After the name of the school and in brackets is a brief history of the successive classifications and name changes of the school using the following abbreviations: CP (County Primary) CS (County Secondary) CSM (County Secondary Modern) PE (Public Elementary, a school, usually a church school, that retained a degree of autonomy from the Local Education Authority, usually later becoming a VA, VC or VP school) RC (Roman Catholic) VA (Voluntary Aided) VC (Voluntary Controlled) VP (Voluntary Provided)

Currently schools in Bedfordshire are divided into Nursery (up to 5 years old), Lower (5-9), Middle (9-13) and Upper (13-18) Schools. Luton has a separate system consisting of Infants, Junior and High Schools with A level students attending Luton VI Form College

The final entry for each record type (e.g. EBV 54/1 for Bedford, Ashburnham Centre logbook) is its archive reference number

Records Kept by School Boards

School Boards were introduced by the Education Act of 1870 and were designed to provide a good standard of education where there was no local school or where the local school was considered inadequate. Local ratepayers voted for Board members and the Board ran the local school, following the Education Act of 1902 Board Schools became Council Schools administered by managers or governors appointed largely by the newly formed Local Education Authority (in Bedfordshire these were: Bedfordshire County Council, Bedford Borough Council and Luton Borough Council). School Boards were only set up in certain localities (see list below), other schools remaining under the control of the National or British Societies or other local charities or individuals. The record office holds the records (usually minute books, correspondence and financial material) of the following School Boards (listed with date of formation and archive reference):

School Governors' and Managers' Minutes

Following the Education Act of 1903 schools were required to have boards of managers (now governors) to run the school. These governors were appointed by different bodies, depending on the nature of the school but including the Local Education Authority, Parish Council and, if a religiously affiliated school, the appropriate governing body of the local church. Before 1974 schools were often grouped together to be managed, a practice which has now ceased. The record office holds the following records, an asterisk after the archive reference number indicating that other types of record, such as correspondence, are also held (all managers'/governors' records are withheld from general public inspection for 30 years):
