"BARNTON, a township in that part of the parish of GREAT BU DWORTH which is in the hundred of BUCKLOW, county palatine of CHESTER, 1¾ mile (N. W. by W.) from Northwich, containing 612 inhabitants. Barnton was a township in Great Budworth ancient parish, Bucklow hundred (SJ 6375), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- It includes the hamlets of Gunners Clough (part), Rosebank and Saltersford.
- The population was 402 in 1801, 1117 in 1851, 2792 in 1901, 3918 in 1951, and 5527 in 2001.
