"EASTHAM, a parish in the higher division of the hundred of Wirrall, county palatine of Chester, 5 miles N.E. of Great Neston, and 9 N.W. of Chester. It is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Mersey, near the Birkenhead railway, and is a ferry station, from which boats cross to Liverpool several times daily. The parish contains the townships of Ellesmere Port, Eastham, Hooton, Nether and Over Pool, Great and Little Sutton, Thornton-Childer, and Whitby. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Chester, value £240, in the patronage of the dean and chapter. The church is a commodious edifice, with tower and spire, built by Inigo Jones. It is dedicated to St. Mary, and contains some handsome monuments of the Stanley's and others. There is also a district church at Ellesmere Port, the living of which is a perpetual curacy in the patronage of the bishop. The parochial charities produce about £30 per annum, £7 of which are for the free school. There is a National school for boys and girls. Richard C. Naylor, Esq., is lord of the manor."

"CHILDER THORNTON, (or Thornton Childer), a township in the parish of Eastham, in the higher division of the hundred of Wirrall, in the county of Chester, 7 miles S. of Birkenhead, 8 N.W. of Chester, and 1 from the Hooton and Sutton stations of the Birkenhead, Lancashire, and Cheshire railway.

"ELLESMERE PORT, a hamlet in the parish of Eastham, county palatine of Chester, 7 miles N. of the city of Chester. It is situated on the banks of the river Mersey, at the entrance to the Ellesmere canal. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Chester, in the patronage of the bishop."

"GREAT AND LITTLE SUTTON, townships in the parish of Eastham, higher division of Wirrall hundred, county Chester, 7 miles N. W. of Chester, its post town, and 1 mile of Sutton railway station. The village is situated near the river Mersey. There is a National school for both sexes. The Presbyterians have a chapel. Sutton Hall is the principal residence.

"HOOTON, a township in the parish of Eastham, higher division of the hundred of Wirrall, county Chester, 7 miles S. of Birkenhead, and 8 N. of Chester. It is a station on the Lancashire and Cheshire Junction railway. It is situated on the river Mersey. Hooton Hall- is the principal residence. There is a small chapel for Roman Catholics."

"LITTLE SUTTON, a township in the parish of Eastham, county Chester, 8 miles N.W. of Chester.

"NETHER POOLE, a township in the parish of Eastham, higher division of the hundred of Wirrall, county Chester, 2½ miles N. of the Sutton station on the Birkenhead, Lancashire, and Cheshire Junction railway, and 8 N. of Chester. It is situated on the river Mersey. Poole Hall is an ancient stone mansion, formerly the residence of the Poole family.

"OVER POOLE, a township in the parish of Eastham, higher division of the hundred of Wirrall, county Chester, adjoins Nether Poole.

"PORT WOOD, a ward in the parish of Stockport, hundred of Macclesfield and borough of Stockport, county Chester, 2 miles from Stockport. It is situated on the river Mersey. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Chester, value £150, in the patronage of the crown and bishop alternately."

"WHITBY, a township in the parishes of Eastham and Stoke, higher division of Wirrall hundred, county Chester, 6 miles N. of Chester. The village is situated near the Dee and Mersey canal, which here communicates with the river Mersey, on which are extensive docks and wharves."
