- Stayley was a township in Mottram-in-Longdendale ancient parish, Macclesfield hundred (SJ 9698), which became a civil parish in 1866.
- The civil parish was abolished in 1894 to become parts of Stalybridge and Mossley (Lancashire).
- The population was 1055 in 1801, 4579 in 1851, and 8750 in 1901.
