Built 1851-52 as a chapel to Wilmslow: St. Bartholomew. In 1866 it became the district church for the township of Chorley, and parts of the township of Bollinfee and Fulshaw (previously served by Wilmslow: St. Bartholomew). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of Saint Philip, Chorley" were described in the London Gazette on 20 February 1866:
"All that part of the parish of Wilmslow, in the county of Chester, and in the diocese of Chester, which is situate generally to the south of an imaginary line commencing upon the boundary dividing the said parish from the parish of Mobberley, in the same county and diocese, at a point in the middle of the bridle road leading from Mobberley to Wilmslow, across Lindow-common; and extending thence eastward along the middle of the said road as far as a point opposite to a boundary stone inscribed 'C. St. P. D.-C...1866, No 1,' and placed at the angle formed by the junction of such road with a certain cross road leading into Back-lane; and extending thence first southward to and along the middle of the said cross road, and then eastward along the middle of the same road to its junction with.Back-lane aforesaid; and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of the said lane to its junction with the high road leading from Mobberley to Wilmslow, where a boundary stone inscribed 'C. St. P. D. C., 1866, No. 2,' has been placed and extending thence north-eastward along the middle of the said high road as far as a point opposite to a boundary stone inscribed 'C. St. P. D. C., 1866, No. 3,' and placed at the junction of such road with a certain lane leading to Butterfly-bank; and extending thence southward to and along the middle of the last-described lane as far as a point opposite to the middle of the western
end of a certain road connecting the last-described lane with the turnpike road leading from Wihnslow to Congleton; and extending thence eastward to and along the middle of the said connecting road to its junction with the said turnpike road; and extending thence southward along the middle of such turnpike-road as far as the point where it is intersected by Preston Brook; and extending thence first north-eastward along the middle of the said brook and then south-eastward along the middle of the same brook (passing under the line
of the London and North-Western Railway) as far as the boundary which divides, the said parish of Wilmslow from the parish of Prestbury, in the county and diocese aforesaid."
The district was affected by the following boundary changes:
- 1877 December 18 — reduced when parts of the townships of Chorley, Pownall Fee and Fulshaw were transferred to Lindow: St. John the Evangelist.
