Church History
Founded in 1840 as a chapel to Cheadle: St. Mary. In 1877 it became the district church for parts of the townships of Handforth, Cheadle Moseley and Cheadle Bulkeley (previously served by Cheadle: St. Mary). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of Saint Chad, Handforth" were described in the London Gazette on 18 December 1877:
"ll that part of the parish of Cheadle in the county of Chester and in the diocese of Chester wherein the present incumbent of such parish now possesses the exclusive cure of souls which consists for the most part of the hamlet of Handforth and which is bounded on the north partly by the parish of Saint Thomas Stockport, partly by the new parish of All Saints Cheadle Hulme, and partly by the detached portion of the said parish of Saint Thomas Stockport which comprises the township of Stockport Etchells on the west, partly by the said detached portion of the last named parish and partly by the parish of Wilmslow, on the southwest by the last-named parish and on the south east by the district chapelry of Christ Church Woodford, all in the county and diocese aforesaid."
The district was affected by the following boundary change:
- 1958 February 25 — reduced when part of Cheadle was transferred to Heald Green: St. Catherine.
