Church History

Built in 1867 as a chapel to Chester: Christ Church. In 1872 it became the district church for the township of Newton by Chester and part of the township of Hoole (previously served by Chester: Christ Church). The boundaries of "The District Chapelry of All Saints, Hoole" were described in the London Gazette on 13 August 1872:

"All that part of the particular district of Christ Church, Chester, in the suburbs of the city of Chester, and in the diocese of Chester, which is situate within the county of Chester, all which said part of such particular district is bounded on the south and on the west by the boundary dividing the said county of Chester from the county of the city of Chester, or, in other words, on the south by the parish of Saint John the Baptist, Chester, in the last-named county, and in the said diocese of Chester, and on the west by that the remaining part of the said particular district of Christ Church, Chester, which is situate within the limits of the county of the city of Chester aforesaid, on the north by the township of Upton, in the parish of Saint Mary on the Hill, situate partly in the said county of the city of Chester, and partly in the said county of Chester, and wholly in the diocese of Chester aforesaid, and on the east partly by the parish or parochial chapelry of Plemonstall, in the last-named county and diocese, and partly by the township of Great Boughton, in the parish of Saint Oswald, Chester, situate partly in the said county of the city of Chester, and partly in the said counfy of Chester, and wholly in the diocese of Chester aforesaid."

The district was affected by the following boundary changes:

  • 1934 August 17 — enlarged when the following areas were transferred from Plemstall: St. Peter and Chester: St. Paul: "All those contiguous portions of the Parish of Plemstall and of the New Parish of Saint Paul, Chester, both in the said County and Diocese, which taken together are bounded upon the south-west, upon the west, and upon the north-west by the said New Parish of All Saints, Hoole, and upon the remaining sides, that is to say, upon the north, upon the northeast, and upon the south-east by an imaginary line commencirig upon the boundary which divides the said New Parish of All Saints, Hoole, from the said Parish of Plemstall at a point in the middle of the road leading from Newton Bank into Hoole Road where such road turns south-eastward opposite Elm Cottages, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of the said road for a distance of 2½ chains or thereabouts to its junction with Hoole Road, and extending thence north-eastward along the middle of Hoole Road for a distance of 10 chains or thereabouts to its junction with Hare Lane, and extending thence south-eastward along the middle of Hare Lane for a distance of 36 chains or thereabouts to the centre of the bridge which carries it across the Chester and Warrington Line of the London Midland and Scottish and Great Western Joint Railway, and extending thence south-westward along the middle of the said line of railway (thereby crossing three times the boundary which divides the said Parish of Plemstall from the said New Parish of Saint Paul, Chester) for a distance of 55 chains or thereabouts to the boundary which divides the said New Parish of Saint Paul, Chester, from the said New Parish of All Saints, Hoole".
  • 1934 August 17 — reduced when the following area was transferred to Chester: St. Paul: "All that portion of the said  New Parish of All Saints, Hoole, which lies to the south-east of the middle of the said Chester and Warrington Line of Railway".
  • 1959 January 23 — enlarged when the following area was transferred from Plemstall: St. Peter: "All lhat part of the parish of Plemstall which lies to the southwest of the middle of the Chester By-Pass road (numbered A41 on the map)".
