An ancient parish church, originally serving the townships of Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Stayley, and Tintwistle. It includes the chapel of Broadbottom: St. Mary.
The district was affected by the following boundary changes:
- 1838 — reduced when parts of the townships of Hollingworth and Tintwistle were transferred to Tintwistle: Christ Church.
- 1840 — reduced when the township of Stayley was transferred to Stalybridge: St. Paul.
- 1840 — reduced when the remaining part of the township of Tintwistle was transferred to Woodhead: St. James.
- 1841 December 21 — reduced when the township of Newton was transferred to Newton in Mottram: St. Mary
- 1847 May 7 — reduced when the township of Godley was transferred to Godley cum Newton Green: St. John the Baptist.
- 1966 June 9 — reduced when the village of Hattersley was transferred to Hattersley: St. Barnabas.
