Church History

It was founded in 1538.

Church History

An ancient parish church, originally serving the township of Darnhall, and parts of the townships of Marton, Over and Weaverham cum Milton. 

The district was affected by the following boundary changes: 

  • 1863 January 13 — reduced when part of the township of Marton was transferred to the new district of Over: St. John the Evangelist. 
  • 1876 May 30 — reduced when the township of Darnhall was transferred to Over: St. Chad. 
  • 1935 April 2 — reduced when part of the township of Over was transferred to Sandiway: St. John the Evangelist. 
  • 1936 July 17 — reduced when of three detached portions lying wholly within the boundaries of Weaverham: St. Mary were transferred to the latter district. 
  • 1936 July 17 — enlarged by the addition of a detached portion of Weaverham: St. Mary lying to the south of Chester Road. 

On 27 October 1971 the district was united with that of Little Budworth: St. Peter, to form the combined district of "Whitegate with Little Budworth".
