DBY, DALBURY LAND TAX; 1810, 1821
Compliments of Michael SPENCER.
First introduced in 1693, these docs can help a family historian locate an ancestor and may even indicate within a year when ones ancestors moved from one village to another. Very few survive before 1780,but between that year and 1832 the Land Tax has good coverage if not almost total. They list names of proprietors and occupiers and the amount of tax assessed. They give therefore a list of people in your ancestral village for any given year, but not a list of all people in that village or town. Later years also list Names or Description of Estates or Property but in most cases it simply lists house or land.

I have not listed the tax, that would be to much to copy but from the two assessments I can see that the Mr Bower/Thomas Campion combination of 1810 is replaced by Richardson and James Holmes. Mr Meynel /Samuel Morley is replaced by owner occupier John White. In both years as the highest tax paid John Beard pays the most.
I was able to use LTA's to trace the year my ancestor became the miller at Sidesmill, Snelston. As a result I was able to find the advert in the Derby Mercury advertising the vacancy which gave a take up date, so I could say almost to the day when they left Lea for Snelston. I was also able to trace where he went after Snelston, he only being listed for a few years. He turned up at Hartington, again at the mill, why did he move? That year his sister's husband William had died and she was pregnant, he took on the running of the mill.
