"HILTON, a township in the parish of Marston-upon-Dove, hundred of Appletree, county Derby, 3 miles N.W. of Egginton station, 5 from Burton, and 8½ S.W. of Derby. It contains the extra parochial place of Hargate. Here is a school for the education of children above seven years old, erected in 1655 by Arthur and Thomas Hanson, which is endowed with about 14 acres of land. There are places of worship for the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. The executors of the late William Mousley Esq., are lords of the manor."
