Memoir of John Dunning, First Lord Ashburton

Trans. Devon. Assoc. vol. 8 (1876). pp.82-112.

by

Robert Dymond

Prepared by Michael Steer

John Dunning (18 October 1731 - 18 August 1783) was a lawyer and politician. He was first noticed in politics when he wrote a notice in 1762 defending the British East India Company merchants against their Dutch rivals. He was a Member of Parliament from 1768 onward. His career in the House of Commons is best known for his Commons motion in 1780 that "the influence of the crown has increased, is increasing, and ought to be diminished". He was created Baron Ashburton in 1782. The paper provides a Dunning pedigree, (p. 112). Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
