Dr Andrew Tucker was born at Ashburton in 1778. Graduating with an LLD from St Andrew's he practiced as a solicitor in the town. He was a keen naturalist, philosopher whose 'Ornithologia Danmoniensis' attempted to improve Colonel Montagus 'Dictionary of British Birds', but was deemed so turgid and "ambitious" that it remained unpublished. After his marriage he moved to London, where he died in 1832. His son, attorney Robert Tucker succeeded his father as steward of the Clinton estate, and is recorded in Parliamentary records as holding the tithes system largely responsible for agricultural distress.
