ASHFORD

From White's Devonshire Directory of 1850

ASHFORD, a small village and parish, on the north side of the estuary of the Taw, 2 miles W.N.W. of Barnstaple, has only 174 souls, and about 359 acres of land, successively held by the Beaumont, Bassett, Moore, and Bampfylde families. About 1815, the estate was sold in lots by Sir C. W. Bampfylde, and it now belongs to George Langdon, Esq., and a few smaller owners. The Church (St. Peter,) is an ancient fabric, with a tower and three bells. It is in good repair, and has a small organ. The rectory, valued in K.B. at £8.13s. 9d., and in 1831 at £119, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. John Kendall Fletcher, D.D., of Callington, Cornwall. The glebe is 8A. 2R. 30P., and the parsonage is a small thatched dwelling. The tithes have been commuted for £85 per annum. The poor have the interest of £8, and here is a small Baptist Chapel.
