The QS43/3 series is a collection of certificates submitted on behalf of Hemp and Flax growers, and which details the quantity of Hemp and/or Flax grown by an individual or individuals. The certificated claims are witnessed by parish officers and submitted to a Justice of the Peace for the County in which the claim is made.

QS43/3-1 Axminster:
To Sir Wilmot Prideaux One of his Majestys Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the County of Devon.
In Pursuance of an Act passed in the Twenty First Year of His Majestys Reign for the Encouragement of the Growth of Hemp and Flax, I Robert Fooks of the Parish of Whitchurch in the County of Dorset, do hereby exhibit before You my Claim to the bounty granted by the said Act, of 4 Pence per Stone for 68 Stones of Flax of the Crop of the Year 1784 grown in a field in the Parish of Axminster called Harts Field and by me broken and properly prepared for Market.
Witness my Hand this 24 Day of September, 1785.

To Sir Wilmot Proideaux One of his Majestys Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the County of Devon.
In Pursuance of an Act passed in the Twenty First Year of His Majestys Reign for the Encouragement of the Growth of Hemp and Flax, I Robert Fooks of the Parish of Whitchurch in the County of Dorset, do hereby exhibit before You my Claim to the bounty granted by the said Act, of 4 Pence per Stone for 140 Stones of Flax of the Crop of the Year 1784 grown in a field in the Parish of Axminster called Round Close and by me broken and properly prepared for Market.
Witness my Hand this 17 Day of September, 1785.

QS43/3-4 Axminster:
HEMP and FLAX Bounties County of Devon, 1788.
In pursuance of the directions of an Act of Parliament passed in the Twenty-sixth Year of his present Majesty's Reign for the Encouragement of the growth of Hemp and Flax in England, I Samuel Stokes of the Parish of Axminster in the County aforesaid, Do hereby claim the Sum of One Pound Nineteen Shillings and Eight Pence being in respect of One Hundred and Nineteen Stones of Flax, by me broken and properly prepared for Market, and grown in the year One Thousand, seven hundred, and Eighty Eight on Lands in the Parish of Thorncombe called Sadborough Ash. As Witness my Hand this Thirteenth Day of June in the Year of Lord One thousand, seven hundred, and Eighty-Nine.
Samuel Stokes - Claimant.
We whose Names are hereunto subscribed, being two of the Parish Officers of the said Parish of Thorncombe Do hereby certify (in pursuance of the directions of the said Act) that we believe the particulars contained in the above Claim to be true.
As Witness our Hands the Day and Year above written. Thomas Follett Churchwarden. Samuel Hitchcock Overseer.
This Claim was signed by and verified upon the Oath of the said Claimant, and attended by the Parish Officers above mentioned, and exhibited to me, one of his Majestys Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid, the Day and year above written. J. Stuckey.

QS43/3-5 Axminster:
HEMP and FLAX Bounties County of Devon. 1788.
In pursuance of the directions of an Act of Parliament passed in the Twenty-sixth Year of his present Majesty's Reign for the Encouragement of the growth of Hemp and Flax in England, I James Sansom of the Parish of Bettiscombe in the County of (Dorset), Do hereby claim the Sum of Fourteen Shillings and ten-pence being in respect of Fourty-four Stones 7lbs of Flax, by me broken and properly prepared for market, and grown in the year One Thousand, seven hundred, and Eighty Seven on Lands in the Parish of Axminster called the Platts upon Beerhall Downs.
As Witness my Hand this Seventh Day of october in the year of Lord One thousand, seven hundred, and Eighty-Eight.

We whose Names are hereunto subscribed, being two of the parish Officers of the said Parish of Axminster Do hereby certify (in pursuance of the directions of the said Act) that we believe the particulars contained in the above Claim to be true. As Witness our Hands the day and year above written.

QS43/3-6 Axminster:
To John Stuckey, esquire One of his Majestys Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the County of Devon.
In pursuance of an Act passed in the Twenty First Year of His Majestys Reign for the Encouragement of the growth of Hemp and Flax, I Ruth Woolley of the Parish of Axminster in the County of Devon, do hereby exhibit before You my Claim to the bounty granted by the said Act, of 4 Pence per Stone for 489 Stones of Flax of the Crop of the year 1787 grown on 5 estates in the Parish of Axminster called Braggs; Burches; Latches; Smiths; and Stevens and by me broken and properly prepared for use.
Witness my Hand this 17th Day of June, 1789 - 489 Stone Flax.
We whose Names are under written, Two of the Parish Officers of the Parish of Axminster in the County of Devon do hereby certify that we believe the several Particulars contained in the above Claim to be strictly true.

QS43/3-7 Axminster:
Know all Men by these Presents, That we Samuel Stokes of Axminster farmer of Gribble Estate; George Hodder of Marshwood, and Samuel Pierce of the same, are held and firmly bound to Redmond Kelly, esq, Clerk of the Peace of the said County of Devon, in the penal sum of Fourteen pounds and Eleven Shillings to be paid to the said Redmond Kelly or his Attorney or Succesors, for which Payment well and faithfully to be made we bind ourselves, and each of us by himself, for the Whole, and each of our Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, firmly by these Presents. Sealed with our Seals. Dated this 25th Day of June in the 30th year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, now King of Great-Britain, and so forth, and in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety.
Whereas the above-named Clerk of the Peace hath this day paid unto the above bounden Samuel Stokes the sum of £4-17s-0d for the Bounty claimed by him on 291 Stone of Flax, grown on and the produce of the above named Estate or some part thereof, in the year 1787 and 1788 and allowed by his Majisties Justices of the Peace for the said County of Devon pursuant to an Act of Parliament passed in the Twenty-sixth Year of the Reign of his present Majesty intituled, 'An act to continue and render more effectual an Act passed in the Twenty-first year of his Majesties Reign, for the Encouragement of the Growth of Hemp and Flax in that part of Great Britain called England'. Now the condition of the above written Obligation is such, that in the Case the said Samuel Stokes is duly intitled to the said Bounty, claimed by and paid to him as aforesaid, according to the true Intent and Meaning of the said Act, then the above written Obligation to be void, or else to be and remain in full Force and Virtue.

QS43/3-8 Axminster:
Know all Men by these Presents, That we John Howe of Axminster farmer of Dislake Estate, Samuel Stokes of the same and George Hodder of (Marshwood) are held and firmly bound to Redmond Kelly, esq, Clerk of the Peace of the said County of Devon, in the penal sum of Eight pounds and 14s to be paid to the said Redmond Kelly or his Attorney or Succesors, for which Payment well and faithfully to be made we bind ourselves, and each of us by himself, for the Whole, our and each of our Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, firmly by the Presents. Sealed with our seals. Dated this 25th Day of June in the 30th Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Third, now King of Great-Britain, and so forth, and in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety.
Whereas the above-named Clerk of the Peace hath this day paid unto the above bounden John Howe the sum of £7-18s for the Bounty claimed by him on 175 Stone of Flax, grown on and the Produce of the above named Estate or some Part thereof, in the year 1787 and allowed by his Majesties Justices of the Peace for the said County of Devon pursuant to an Act of Parliament passed in the Twenty-sixth Year of the Reign of his present Majesty, intituled, 'An act to continue and render more effectual an Act passed in the Twenty-first year of his Majesties Reign, for the Encouragement of the Growth of Hemp and Flax in that part of Great Britain called England'. Now the condition of the above written Obligation is such, that in Case the said John Howe is duly intitled to the said Bounty claimed by and paid to him as aforesaid, according to the true Intent and Meaning of the said Act, then the above written Obligation to be void, or else to be and remain in full Force and Virtue.
