The Barnstaple Parish Register [1539-1837]
Trans. Devon. Assoc. 27, (1895) pp. 362-373.
by
Joseph Harper
Prepared by Michael Steer
Harper's paper, read at the Association's 1895 Okehampton meeting is basically a statistical exploration of the Barnstaple Parish Register over a 300 year period; until the Act for the compulsory registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths was passed in 1837. Also included are registration data from nearby Pilton (1570-1829) and Fremington (1610-1829). The author particularly focuses on the devastating impact of epidemics and plague during the period. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the University of Michigan Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
