John Gay, poet and celebrated author of the Beggar's Opera, was a native of Barnstaple, and educated at its Grammar School. This edited version of his biography has been produced by William Henry Kearley WRIGHT, son of William and Mary Ann WRIGHT, who was born at Plymouth (1844). When the Free Library of Plymouth Committee, in 1876, was appointing a librarian, Mr. Wright was selected to fill the post. Beside numerous contributions to periodical literature, he published 'the Visitors' Guide to Mount Edgecumbe,' 1871; 'The Illustrated Newquay Guide and Visitors' Hand Book,' 1885; and 'The Illustrated Hand Book to Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse,' 1885. He also edited (1890) the 'History of Okehampton, This rare book was produced from a digital copy produced by www.forgottenbooks.org that can be downloaded from Google Books. Google has sponsored the digitisation of books from several sources, generally libraries. Those on which copyright has expired are available for free educational and research use, both as individual books and as full collections to aid researchers.
