Transcriber’s notes:

Port Books for the combined ports of Appledore, Bideford and Barnstaple are housed in the National Archives from 1565 to 1745. There are some gaps due to non-survival of records, and other gaps due to damaged documents.

Typically these books record:
• Date of entry
• Name of ship
• Tonnage of vessel
• Port where vessel is registered
• Port where vessel is going to, or coming from
• Name of the Captain or Master of the vessel
• Name of the merchant responsible for the goods
• Whether the merchant is English or foreign
• Description of the cargo, including the method of storage (barrels, casks, bags), the weight (hundredweights, pounds) and the value for the purposes of assessing tax to be paid.

The following officials were responsible for checking the cargoes and recording the tax due:
• Collector or ‘Customer’ – made a return of all goods exported or imported and all moneys received, for which he issued a cocket (receipt).
• Controller – made a similar return but did not receive the payments.
• Searcher – appointed to prevent fraud, who had to make examine the goods and return a warrant to show he had done so.
• Surveyor - appointed to check the work of the Searcher.

The book for 1595 / 1596 contains 13 pages, mostly written in Latin, but with some English.

Details of the cargoes have been transcribed in brief. Further information on quantity and value may be available from the original document. For example, on 24th October 1595, an entry reads:

Le Phenixe de North(a)m onis XXX dol [30 tons] unde Robertus Whitsune est M'r [master of the vessel] v(er)rs(u)s Rochell decimo quarto die Octobris [24th October].
Rogero Beaple de Barn(staple) mercatorem [merchant] indig(inous) [British] pro duobz balk cont vigint pece baies [2 packs containing 20 pieces of baise], value XL£ [£40].

Some commodities may not be obvious, so here are some definitions:
• Baise – A coarse woollen cloth
• Bay salt - Salt derived by evaporating seawater in the sun.
• Christall bedstones – Unknown, but a bedstone might be the lower stone in a mill.
• Dunsters - Cloth woven at Dunster in Somerset.
• Kersey - Coarse woollen cloth with a smooth back, derived from the village of Kersey in Suffolk.
• Train [oil] – Drained fish oil, usually from cod.
• Woad – A plant used to produce a blue dye.

Similarly, some ports may not be spelt as we expect today:
• Bayun/Byon = Bayonne, France
• Maderas = Madeira
• Rochell = La Rochelle, France
• St John de Luice = Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France
• Surreis = probably meant to be Terreras?
• Terreras = unclear, might be Terciera, Azores
