Transcriber’s notes:

Port Books survive for the ports of Appledore, Bideford and Barnstaple from 1565 to 1745. There are some gaps due to non-survival of records, and other gaps due to damaged documents.

Typically these books record:
• Date of entry
• Name of ship
• Tonnage of vessel
• Port where vessel is registered
• Port where vessel is going to, or coming from
• Name of the Captain or Master of the vessel
• Name of the merchant responsible for the goods
• Whether the merchant is English or foreign
• Description of the cargo, including the method of storage (barrels, casks, bags), the weight (hundredweights, pounds) and the value for the purposes of assessing tax to be paid.

The book for 1705 contains 38 pages, written in English.

In the case of this document, the tonnages of the vessels were not recorded.
Details of the cargoes have been transcribed as fully as possible.
Further information on quantity and value may be available from the original document.

Some commodities and units of measurement may not be obvious, so here are some definitions:
• Coquette (Cocket) - A document issued by Customs Officials certifying payment of duties.
• Beaver womb - A segment of fur from the abdomen of a beaver.
• Bugle - An ornamental tube-shaped glass or plastic bead sewn on to clothing.
• Cordage – Any type of ropes, especially for ships rigging.
• Dowlas – A plain cloth chiefly for used aprons, pocketing, soldiers' gaiters, linings and overalls.
• Ell - Measure of length of textiles (equivalent to six hand breadths), about 45 inches.
• Frieze – A coarse woollen, plain weave cloth with a nap on one side.
• Fustian – A heavy woven cotton cloth.
• Hides in the hair – Animal skin that has not been tanned or dressed.
• Kersey - Coarse woollen cloth with a smooth back, derived from the village of Kersey in Suffolk.
• Lignum vitae - Wood, also called guayacan, indigenous to the Caribbean & South America, the world's heaviest wood.
• Muscavadoes - Unrefined brown sugar.
• Ozenbriggs - Coarse linen originally made in Osnabrück in North Germany.
• Perpetua - A strong woollen fabric.
• Raisins solis – Sun dried grapes (raisins).
• Rug – A coarse frieze, a frieze cloak or mantle.
• Serge – A type of twill fabric with diagonal ridges on both sides. French serge was softer and finer than English serge.
• Shalloon - A light, twilled woolen fabric used chiefly for linings, originally made in Châlons-sur-Marne, France.
• Snake root - A species of flowering plant in the milkwort family, used for medicinal purposes.
• Train [oil] – Drained fish oil, usually from cod.
• Winchester - Denotes the legal standard for bushels and chalders.

Similarly, some ports may not be spelt as we expect today:
• Antegoa = Antigua, West Indies
• Fiall = Faial, Azores
• Tryall = [unclear], possibly Faial intended
